“Were you waiting by the door for me?” she asked in a teasing tone.

“No, I wasn’t,” he answered. “I was waiting by one of the windows on the second floor.”

His response clearly took her by surprise and she laughed, coming up the rest of the steps. Her scent washed over him, filling him with the insane urge to pull her into his arms and kiss her.

If he did that right now, she would probably slap him and never talk to him again. Charles was seriously tempted despite that.

He took a step away from her, pretending that he was only reaching for the door when he really needed space to clear his suddenly cluttered mind. “After you, my lady,” he said with a grin.
